When a packaging manufacturer decides to prove its own technology, it doesn’t write a whitepaper — it builds a brand. That’s the story behind NotAPetBottle, the plant-based water packaging brand developed on Gable TopPak’s manufacturing line, and the clearest demonstration yet of what our facilities can produce beyond gable top cartons.
The Challenge: Proving PLA at Production Scale
Plastic alternatives are easy to talk about and hard to manufacture reliably. Most “compostable bottle” claims in the market are either lab prototypes or small-batch novelties that can’t hold up to commercial water-bottling lines — clarity, seal integrity, and shelf stability all suffer when a material shifts from petroleum-based PET to a plant-derived polymer.
Gable TopPak took on this exact problem: could our existing bottling infrastructure be adapted to run PLA (polylactic acid) — a bioplastic made from renewable feedstock like corn and sugarcane — at the same reliability standard as conventional PET, without compromising the finished product?
The Material: NPB-PLA™
The result is a proprietary formulation we call NPB-PLA™, engineered specifically for water packaging rather than adapted from generic industrial PLA. Getting there meant solving for clarity (PLA can haze under certain thermal conditions), seal strength on our existing capping lines, and shelf stability across India’s climate range — southern humidity to northern winters.
The full technical breakdown of the material — sourcing, properties, and how it performs against conventional PET — is documented on NotAPetBottle’s material page, built specifically for brands and buyers evaluating PLA as a packaging option.
The Product: A Brand Built to Prove the Point
Rather than license the technology quietly, we built NotAPetBottle as a fully consumer-facing brand — packaged drinking water and natural mineral water, bottled entirely in NPB-PLA™. The thinking was simple: if the material can carry an entire retail brand end to end, it’s proven. If it can’t, better to find out before a private-label client’s name is on the bottle.
The brand is live, shipping, and — more usefully for prospective Gable TopPak clients — a working reference they can hold in their hands rather than a spec sheet they have to take on faith.
Where PLA Fits Against Other Formats
PLA isn’t a replacement for every packaging need we manufacture — gable top cartons still outperform it on cost-per-unit at high volume, and glass or aluminium remain the right call for certain premium positioning. What PLA solves specifically is the single-use bottled water segment, where plastic-free is a genuine purchase driver but reusable formats aren’t practical.
For a fuller comparison of where PLA sits against glass, aluminium, stainless steel, and carton — the trade-offs in cost, weight, and end-of-life — NotAPetBottle maintains a detailed materials comparison that we point our own prospective clients to when they’re deciding which packaging format fits their brand.
What This Means for Gable TopPak Clients
The practical takeaway for any brand considering private-label or white-label water: Gable TopPak’s manufacturing capability now spans gable top cartons and PLA bottles, backed by a live consumer brand running on the same production floor your order would run on. That’s not a claim on a spec sheet — it’s NotAPetBottle, in market, today.
If your brand is weighing plastic-free packaging as part of its positioning, this is the same evaluation NotAPetBottle went through — and the same manufacturing line that’s available for private-label production.
